MLB…Wednesday, February 4th.
Sometimes, you read a story or read a piece of news that makes you feel kind of bad. Yesterday it was revealed that Josh Hamilton has had surgery to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder. The Los Angeles Angels have said that Hamilton could miss 6-8 weeks, although he could resume baseball activities sooner. It has been sad to see Hamilton’s drop-off since he won the AL MVP award back in 2010. Over the last two seasons, Hamilton has not been the same player, as he has only hit 31 home runs over the last two seasons. Hamilton is a player who was known for his power, and he has seen his production diminish. Hamilton has had his share of issues. I hope that he can conquer this one too.
In another case of players who have had dramatic drop-offs, relief pitcher John Axford has signed a minor-league deal with the Colorado Rockies. The deal includes an invitation to spring training. Axford is probably best remembered for his time with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he recorded 106 of his 116 career saves.
The Kansas City Royals were able to re-sign two of the major pieces of last year’s run to the World Series. The team announced that Lorenzo Cain and Mike Moustakas came to terms. I am glad that the Royals have these two players returning.
The Baltimore traded 2B Steve Lombardozzi to the Pittsburgh Pirates for an undisclosed amount of cash.
The Cole Hamels talk just won’t go away. The latest is that the Philadelphia Phillies and the Boston Red Sox continue to be in discussions for the ace pitcher. The Phillies continue to demand Boston catching prospect Blake Swihart and the Red Sox keep saying ‘no’.
The San Francisco Giants have agreed to terms with 1B Brandon Belt. The deal is for one year and $3.6M.
