MLB…Another Big Domino Falls.

.
The next big MLB Free Agent has been claimed! The San Diego Padres have signed P James ‘Big Games James’ Shields to a 4-year contract that has been reported to be worth $75M, and includes an option for a 5th year. This is more in line with what I have been calling for in a contract for Shields. As you may recall, I said that I believed that Shield’s original demands of 5 years / $110M was too steep of a price for a 33-year old pitcher with a lot of innings on his arm. He will be a good addition to an already decent, but young Padres pitching staff. It can be assumed that now that the Padres have added Shields, they will not be in on the bidding war for Cole Hamels anymore…
This move is probably the last in what has been an already impressive off-season flurry of activity for the Padres. Prior to the signing of Shields, the Padres had already added Derek Norris, Justin Upton, Wil Myers, and Will Middlebrooks. I will be curious to see how much of an improvement in NL West standings that this leads to. Will the Padres now be able to challenge the defending champion San Francisco Giants or the Los Angeles Dodgers? This could be an exciting summer in California!
From the files of ‘you spoke too soon…’ Cuba has won the Caribbean Series with a 3-2 win over two-time defending champion Mexico. This was the first Caribbean title for the island-nation since 1960. I had stated in an earlier article that I had seen the 1-3 record of Cuba in pool play as an indication that they may have been hurt by some of the recent defections that had occurred. Obviously I was wrong…
